Kitesurfer pulled off downend point in croyde.

Shoot the breeze and stay in the loop with the unhinged and unhooked word on the street.

I was at saunton on saturday preparing to go for a kitesurf when i saw an raf helicopter whinch someone off downend point in croyde which is the end of the cliffs on the right when your on saunton beach. A long way out and not a good place to be.
The helicopter landed on the beach and out hopped a kitesurfer complete with kite, didn't see a board. The guy looked ok albeit a little shakey. Anyone got anymore details or care to own up?

Good work by the raf though as it wasn't a good place to be.

geez. Saw that 'copter take off twice on Saturday from Valley as it flew over our heads.

It always makes you wander what has happened, whom it is and where it is going. The hope is always that it is not a kiter, or anyone in really serious trouble. Period

Yer, I was at Westward Ho! on Sunday and saw it down the Saunton end quite a few times. I hoped it was just training exercises or summat.

Why would you need rescuing from there?

I will admit about 5 years ago I managed to drop my board whilst kitesurfing downend and it got washed up one of the runnels in the reef. In the end I had toland my kite on the reef and let it suffer a couple of small tears so that I could then recover my board. Once i had my kit together I did what all the surfers do and scrambled/walked over the rocks back to the road! I patched my kite later that day and got back on it.

A guy walks into a bar and asks for a double entendre, so the bar maid gives him one....

I kited round that point from Croyde years back with Jason Furness... I remember thinking "Watch Furness and learn" after wondering how the hell we were going to get out back in an onshore wind at Croyde with big mushy waves rolling in... I watched, he got worked :-)

We eventually made it out and round the point but I was bricking it as it was February and f8ckin cold and the waves were much bigger than I was used to! If something had gone wrong and I'd washed up on those rocks I would have been glad of a heli rescue!

We made it in to Saunton after a couple of hours riding the waves (avoiding the waves :-D ) and got a lift back to Croyde for another session... my harness snapped after 10mins!

I doubt it as that one is based (for the moment) at Chivenor, about a couple of miles from the beach!

I don't know what time this was but last Sat I went out at Woolie that and it was pretty evil - might have been less gusty at Saunton. In the late morning just after high tide there was more south in the wind and that combined with a falling tide would make for a huge rip sucking out to the point, if a kite was drropped anywhre near the 'wrong' part of the beach or a long way out back would be off around the point in no time.

Glad to see the guy was OK.
