I have recently been on a quest for some new kites and settled on some Blade Primes; however no matter what kites I was getting I was looking to pair it with the new 2010 North Quad Bar. From the moment I saw some pictures and information on the forums and then on the North site I have been itching to get one.
I made an enquiry a good bit back and James at BBR was kind enough to email me when they eventually did arrive in stock. He also took the time to answer lots of questions with some of his email reply’s coming through in the evening and this was because he was busy catching up after being at hospital because his second nipper had just been introduced to the world – top bloke!
Anyway the bar arrived and it looks even better in real life than in the pictures just oozing absolute quality and in use it just works brilliantly. I had to tweak it a little by adding some small pigtails with knots to the fronts (every other kite I have owned has been opposite to this) and then shorten the rears using the knots on the leaders under the floats. You can also adjust the bar length by using an inner or outer setting on the leaders/bar ends.
The chicken loop setup is excellent, the Iron heart release system works really well and is a doddle to reset plus he ability to ride suicide but still have full safe release by routing the tubing through the depower line ring is brilliant. The frontline depower line itself is routed very tidily through the whole thing and the swivel to untwist the frontlines is great and works really well. Also the rotating locking finger/donkey dick is excellent and it clicks round to stay out the way for unhooking, but is there when you need it.
Talking of clicks and unhooking when you do then the bar and top of the chicken loop is designed so that it clicks into place securely (really does with an audible ‘click’ and takes a bit of getting used to) and is super easy to hook back in without having to grab the loop. Not being a fan of below the bar depower I really like the above the bar depower cleat setup and it is very easy to use where you can actually see how much depower you have and there is not straps or toggles flapping in the way because you can attach what little line there is to the stopper via Velcro.
All in all the North Quad bar is a very high quality bit of equipment and North have literally ‘raised the bar’ with this and all other manufacturers could learn something from it and if your current bar setup falls short then I suggest you check one out.
